Vice President of Information Technology (VP of IT)

Location: Tennessee

Reports To: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) / President

Compensation Package: Circa 200,000 Bonus Profit Sharing: 30% annual target

Role Summary

The VP of IT is a critical executive role responsible for shaping the organization’s technology vision and ensuring that all technology initiatives directly align with business objectives. This is a working manager role, requiring a balance of high-level strategic planning and hands-on tactical execution. You will lead a team of 10 IT professionals (E-commerce, Developers, Network Admins, Help Desk, ERP Specialists) in a mid-sized, multi-location distribution environment. Your mandate is to keep mission-critical systems stable and secure while driving innovation, automation, and efficiency. You will serve as the bridge between the IT department and business functions (Sales, Finance, Warehouse), ensuring technology enhances profitability and scalability without the luxury of unlimited resources or standby project teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning & Project Management – Drive innovation, productivity, and growth by implementing automation of high-volume, human-based processes.
  • Identify, evaluate, and champion new technologies (software, infrastructure, hardware) that address prioritized business needs.
  • Build consensus across departments to approve technology solutions that satisfy agreed-upon objectives.
  • Manage the full project lifecycle from inception to completion, ensuring delivery on time and within budget.
  • Operational Excellence & Systems Reliability – Ensure 100% availability of effective, easy-to-use systems that enhance long-term profitability.
  • Consolidate servers, subscriptions, and software platforms to maintain single systems-of-record and streamline approval task management.
  • Maintain ongoing system penetration risk analysis and version currency for ERP (Infor CloudSuite Distribution), WMS, and ancillary platforms.
  • Develop and maintain commercially viable business continuity policies and procedures with ISO-compliant documentation, including periodic plan exercises.
  • Security, Compliance & Governance – Oversee cybersecurity protocols and risk management to protect the organization’s digital assets.
  • Manage data and access governance policies to enable compliance with government regulations, trading partner requirements, and financial institutions.
  • Maintain high sense of urgency regarding system uptime, security, and risk mitigation.
  • Team Management & Talent Development – Manage day-to-day IT operations including hiring, training, and supervising a team of approximately 8 heads.
  • Develop internal talent to prevent single sources of failure in any key process or technology.
  • Acquire internal and external permanent and contract resources necessary to implement technology plans.
  • Balance priorities and resources effectively (no large standby project teams).
  • Budgeting & Financial Acumen – Manage the IT budget, ensuring cost-effective solutions and efficient use of resources.
  • Understand general ledger accounting in a distribution environment to inform technology investments and cost allocation.
  • Communication & Cross-Functional Leadership – Act as a bridge between IT and other departments, facilitating clear communication and collaboration.
  • Manage customer and supplier service provisioning expectations by engaging with project leaders, sales, and contract teams.
  • Translate complex technical topics into clear, succinct language for non-technical stakeholders and customers.

Required Qualifications

  • 5 years of IT management experience in a multi-location environment (mid-sized business preferred).
  • Significant experience with supply chain ERP and warehouse management systems (WMS).
  • Significant development and integration experience with APIs, BODs, web services, etc.
  • Experience with Infor CloudSuite Distribution (CSD) and understanding of how it interfaces with other applications.
  • Experience building an IT department “from the ground up” (both applications and people).

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Professional certifications (e.g., PMP, CISM, CISSP) are advantageous.
  • Deep understanding of on-premise vs. cloud-based data processing advantages/disadvantages (AWS, Azure, etc.).
  • Cybersecurity, risk management, and network architecture.
  • Data analytics – ability to interpret data to make informed decisions.
  • Experience with ERP (supply chain/distribution focus) and WMS (TWL experience a plus).
  • Proven ability to lead, manage, and develop IT teams (hiring, training, performance evaluation).
  • Strong project management (from inception to completion).
  • Budget management and optimization.
  • Understanding of general ledger accounting in a distribution environment.
  • Exceptional communication across departments and with customers.
  • Balance of business and IT acumen with servant-leadership mentality.
  • Visionary but practical – comfortable with strategic planning AND “rolling up your sleeves” to work alongside the team.
  • Strong sense of urgency regarding uptime and security.
  • Understanding of key dependencies among wholesale distribution functions (sales, finance, warehouse, etc.).
  • Ability to plan, execute, and propagate change while evaluating ongoing effectiveness.

What Success Looks Like (First 12–18 Months)

  • All mission-critical systems are stable, secure, and aligned with business needs.
  • Demonstrated reduction in manual, high-volume processes through automation.
  • No single points of failure in key processes or technology.
  • Up-to-date business continuity plan with ISO-compliant documentation and proven exercises.
  • Consolidated platform/saas footprint, reducing complexity and cost.
  • A high-performing IT team with clear priorities and measurable outcomes.
